HP Spectre x360 - 13-aw0054na
Microsoft Windows 11

One of the USB-C charger ports on my HP Spectre 13-AW series laptop broke about a year ago (fine, there's still one that worked...even though I couldn't charge and present).

Now today the only remaining Usb-c port started smoking!!!

I've read a LOT of conversations on here around other people experiencing the EXACT same issue with the Spectres which seems like it's a design fault...suspiciously when the laptop comes out of warranty.

As with other people, I don't want to have to pay loads of money to get this (now) COMMON issue fixed when the laptop was expensive.eniugh initially that this shouldn't happen.

Does anyone know if HP are helping its customers with this issue free of charge?

Or, HP if you're reading this - please can you help me resolve this issue that's not a normal wear and tear when it's smoking/smells like an electrical fire and has happened to lots of other people?

If the port is smoking, do not use the laptop.

That is a safety issue.

That is not a common issue.

If it were, we would be aware of it and HP would have resolved it by now.

It is unfortunate that your laptop is out of warranty.

Free repair after warranty period expired?

You did have a long opportunity to extend the warranty and you chose not to.

Your available options are to either replace the laptop or have it repaired.

If you search smoking charger port, the majority appear to be the Spectre....and there's more than a few posts...

I didn't realise that I needed to extend my warranty due the fact that a HP product could have burned my house down.

That's partly what I'm annoyed about.

A reputable company shouldn't have a product (which was looked after) that could burn the house down after a couple of years

If that was a risk then I would have liked to have known and I wouldn't have bought it.

If it shouldn't have been a risk then it's some form of catastrophic failure with the hardware, regardless of time period.

Statistically, based on the sheer volume of Spectre model laptops in use, and laptops in general, that is a very small number.

It could have happened with any brand of laptop or model.

"I didn't realise that I needed to extend my warranty due the fact that a HP product could have burned my house down."

If an example like that is a concern of yours, then you may need to consider not using any electronic product, including mobile phones, which having Lithium Ion batteries inside, are even more dangerous.

Extending a warranty is something most people do that want something more protective of their budget and savings.
