HP Spectre 16" webcam switch just stopped working. Camera is on.

 

After much searching I found a suggestion that disconnecting and reconnecting the battery could correct this situation. As my machine is still in warranty, that was not a good idea. Bios reset had not worked. Reasoning ship mode puts the battery in a more off state than just turning off the machine, I gave it a try. This worked, so, as the "Spectre x-360 16" is a consumer machine, turn it off, plug in the power supply, turn it on and hit f10 till you get the bios screen, hit Ctrl-Alt-Shift-S and choose ship mode and then unplug the power supply. This effectively disconnects the power sufficiently to work. **You must plug the power supply back in before you hit the power button or you machine will not start and you might think you have killed it!

I only waited like 30 seconds to plug it back in. It solved the problem for me.
