Hi everyone!
The back/bottom of my laptop is coming off on one side. I tried to press it back together but it won't pop back in.. The opening is rather small for now, but I feel like it's getting worse. Any ideas what may be causing this and if it's an easy or complex fix (i.e. battery swelling related or something else).
It's a few months out of warranty so I'm not sure where to get it fixed.
Best,
Oana

Regardless of the underlying cause of the problem: Pressing it back together won't work.
The problem is most likely the battery - and assuming that is the case, the battery must be removed to prevent further damage to the computer. It is certainly possible for the situation to get worse, possibly to the extent that the computer is unusable.
Keep your backups current, just in case.
This is something you can perhaps fix on your own.

Thank you, Dragon-fur! I’m not really a tech savvy person so I’m not sure I’d be able to replace the battery myself.. I’ll probably have to find a repair shop after ordering the battery.
However, I am shocked that you mentioned it’d dangerous as Hp state on their site that swollen batteries don’t present a risk. I’ve only had this laptop for 2.5 years and I use it plugged in 90% of the times so I wouldn’t expect something as serious as this! It’s an expensive laptop so while I expect the battery to give in first, I never imagined it can be dangerous.
I’ll try to reach out to Hp on Monday to understand what’s going on.
best

You are welcome.
Very rarely is a swollen battery more than just inconvenient.
I did say you need to remove the battery from the computer to prevent (further) damage - leaving a swollen battery inside the case can damage other components in the computer, for example, the keyboard, touchpad, the case itself where the screws are trying to keep the case closed.
The reason for possible additional damage is simply stress of "too much battery and not enough space" inside a very small area.
Stay Safe.
