I wanted to post a follow up on my motherboard. HP sent me a box to return my laptop via FedEx Express. I received notification within a day that they had received it, repaired it, and were sending it back. I received the laptop the following week and much to my surprise they not only replaced the motherboard but the top and bottom case and the keyboard all free of charge. I'm very happy that HP is making good on this issue and that I have a repaired laptop that was out of warranty. I have a renewed faith in HP!!!!

You should contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission. They have much more legal authority than the BBB. Even if you had your laptop repaired, the CPSC should be notified so they can track the problem. If multiple users have the same problem (like it appears here), then they can force a recall before someone's house burns down.

I'm glad it worked out for you. HP told me that my system is out of warranty and there is nothing they can do for me. So they offered to fix it for $549. In which after spending $1,600 on the laptop a year ago I choose to decline

The EXACT same thing happened to me two days ago. This is utterly ridiculous.... It's obviously an issue with the laptop if THIS MANY people are experiencing the same issue at virtually identical points in the product lifecycle. My Spectre is 5.5 months out of warranty and the motherboard spontaneously burnt up! HP, I'd like to respectfully encourage you take care of your customers and make this right please.
