This has also happened to me - just two days ago. While doing a Windows 10 update, the machine simple died. Could not power it back on.
I took it to a repair shop and they opened it up and say that part of the motherboard had burned. It's dead.
Reading thru all the comments on this thread shows me that HP has a serious issue with the x360's. I purchased this machine on 7/20/2015 from Best Buy. Now, about 7 months outside the one year warranty, this happens...just like so many others.
HP (Kevin??), I await a contact from you. This needs to be addressed.
Thanks.

HP has contacted me but are unwilling to fix my broken motherboard.
HP's representative denied that this is a known fault, so all the posters here must just be making it up...
Nevertheless, it's good to know that the quality of HP's products and customer care are this poor. I will be avoiding HP products in future and recommending friends and colleagues do the same.

Sorry to hear you're having the same issues as lots of of other people have reported. It sucks that a laptop as expensive as this and as new as this can have a problem! It's a shame because it's actually a great laptop. Anyway, I too contacted Kevin through this forum and he passed on my details to my local hp (as I live in the UK) and after I didn't hear from them for a week I contacted him again and he escalated it before I heard from them today. True to their word, as a gesture of goodwill, they will repair my out of warranty laptop. I haven't sent it in yet, but will do so next week. I'll let you know when and if it gets fixed. I hope you manage to get hp to help, they seem to be coming to the realisation that this isn't acceptable, even for out of warranty laptops. Take care!

This just isn't right that HP is honoring this for some and not others. I encourage those who have not been getting a resolution to go to the Consumer Product Safety Commission website at https://www.cpsc.gov/ and file a report (even if you don't live in the US). If enough people file they can force HP to do a recall. I recommend this especially if you smelled something burning coming from your laptop because the potential is there for more than just a burn mark on the motherboard. My fear is that someone will be injured or property will be damaged because of this obvious flaw.

I wanted to provide an update regarding my burnt motherboard. In short, I was contacted via my post and then received an email from an awsesome case manager (Renee) who handled getting my laptop repaired swiftly! They sent me a box via FedEx and I sent it back the same day. It really suprised me because when they received my laptop, they repaired it within 2 hrs (replaced motherboard and battery) and sent it right back out to me. I received and sent back to them the FedEx box last Wednesday (to CA), and suprisingly, the repaired laptop was back at my house by Friday afternoon! Thanks so much HP for doing the right thing on this. You've successfully converted an adversary to an advocate. Cheers!
Warm regards,
GeeHud

This is what they call "scheduled/programmed obsolescence".
All the modern technology is manufactured to break just after the warranty period. Repairing these kind of product is usually too expensive compared to the market value after the warranty period.
They breaks after the warranty so you have to buy a new computer.

Add me to the list... This happened to me last Friday night (2/17/17) a few minutes after I began using the laptop. I was browsing the web when I heard a small pop followed by the laptop completely losing power. After I opened up the bottom panel to see what was going on I noticed the same small burn mark on the sticker next to the SSD. The most frightening part was when I plugged the power cord back in and it started to spark from the spot where the burn hole was.
I've been trying to recover my data from the SSD with a SATA/IDE to USB 3.0 cord with no luck, so if anyone has had success using a different method please let me know.
I bought the laptop on 4/23/15 so definitely beyond warranty but for this to happen at 22 months is unacceptable.
EDIT: Mine is the 13-4003dx.

Just an update. HP Completely took care of me. I'm stationed out here in Europe and they sent me a box in which I sent back my laptop free of charge. It was repaired and sent back to me with in two weeks.
HP just earned a customer
