hi again,
I asked about my Spectre not charging a few weeks ago and unfortunately the port had issues but couldn't be replaced. I used the second USB-C port for a little while, but then it stopped powering on completely, so I took it to a repair shop. They said that the CPU was overheating and shutting off periodically and would need to be replaced, but that since the issue causing the overheating couldn't be determined it could recur if I simply replace the CPU, so it would be better to replace the motherboard completely.
So, I'm now looking for a new motherboard for this computer as a last resort -- it was an expensive computer and I really liked it, so it doesn't feel right to give up just yet. I looked on the HP parts list page for my model (13ap0028ca) here: https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c06510393 at the System Boards (16).
but I don't really understand -- there are 4 different part numbers all for the same CPU, and I don't know how to tell which one applies to my computer.
Intel Core i7-8565U processor (WWAN) | L37641-001 |
Intel Core i7-8565U processor | L37640-001 |
Intel Core i7-8565U processor | L37639-001 |
Intel Core i7-8565U processor | L37638-001 |
my model is below:
HP Spectre x360 - 13-ap0028ca
5MT98UA
I had a Core i7-8565U processor with 16GB of RAM. Which is the correct part number to search for, and is it available to buy through HP right now?
thanks for any help,
Mare

The simplest way to find the system board part number is to use the HP Partsurfer utility online.
I recommend that you use the notebook's serial number, not the part or product number to get an accurate result.
https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer/
The memory modules that you current system board has will be compatible with the replacement system board with the same part number. Don't toss them!
You will also need to get a Windows 10 or 11 license activation code, since the original license activation code is tied to the system board and cannot be reused or transferred. That is Microsoft's current activation license method.
You can find an inexpensive license activation code for about $20.00 online. Check Britech09 on YouTube.

Wow! Thank you so much for your help, Erico! I didn't know about that Partsurfer page, but it's incredibly useful. It's exactly what I needed. And I had no idea the Windows install was linked to the board either, so thank you for that as well -- I will look into getting a new activation code. I really really appreciate your time and expertise, thank you!
