HP Stream 14
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So, I know this has been discussed on a few forums: the HP Stream seems to be pretty notorious when it comes to storage space. I just bought my HP stream very recently, and like everyone else, I am having a problem with the storage filing up completely from Windows updates.. (It says 29 GB out of 29.1 GB)

I have used to the storage options provided every time my computer tells me it can't update: since most of the files are 'essential' since they are part of windows, I have only ever been able to free up about 1.2 GB (That was from removing old windows update files). The 1.2 GB that I freed up two days ago has since refilled itself (without any downloads or upgrades on my part). I have not downloaded any games, the only program I downloaded was microsoft works, though I believe that may have already been downloaded when I bought this. I even have been transferring every single word document (I am a grad student, so there are a fair amount of those) to USB Flash drives and deleting them off my internal storage. I have not downloaded a single game, and have deleted most of the games that came with the laptop.

I wanted to see which memory options have worked best for everyone? SD Card, External Hard drive, USB? Is there any way to use external storage (like an SD card) in order to fulfill space requirements for windows updates, because in my experience, when you go too long without updating, everything stops working.

It just seems crazy to me that they would still even sell this computer if its literally impossible to update now? I have never heard of operating system information taking up 99.9% of storage space; having the computer being "intended for cloud storage" is absolutely useless if it can't even update its OS...

Tl:Dr: I have an HP Stream 14, it can't update windows 10 to the latest version, storage issues, read the bold part.

Follow up question: Has anyone had any success taking their computer in somewhere and having the internal storage replaced/upgraded (don't even know if thats possible)

Upgrading the onboard storage can be done.  As with all upgrades there is risk involved. Before you do this make sure that you have created the recovery media with the HP Recovery media creation utility.  The video shows an upgrade to a 128GB emmc storage space. Now that is useable.

You can purchase the emmc board online.

The description and part number of the Samsung emmc board is is 128GB mSATA MZMPC128HBFU PM830

The best way to update the OS is to use the Microsoft Windows media creator.

Create a USB installation flash drive and install the Spring Creators Update. That is the latest version of Windows 10.

You will need a USB flash drive of between 8-32GB capacity.  I generally use a 16GB flash drive for this purpose.

Save all of your documents to an external USB flash drive. The sd media cards are generally way too slow to really be of much use.
