I continue to struggle with using the USB-C ports on my Spectre Notebook for charging. I have tried to use non-HP USB-C chargers on my Spectre, when powered on and powered off, but charging does not take place. Very disappointing and completely unexpected given the high regard of the HP brand.
From the forums, it is difficult to establish which notebook product and BIOS update will enable use of any USB-C compliant charger. So, I have two approaches left; 1) buy an HP USB-C Power Delivery compliant charger which I can then attempt to use on other devices and 2) buy an HP Hub that will provide the USB-C Power Delivery charging capability which can also then be used on other devices.
So, this request for support is around option 1). Is there an HP Accessory charger that is USB-C Power Delivery compliant?
When I check the HP Store, none of the chargers provide unequivocal statements on USB-C Power Delivery. When I check the supplied charger (details below), again there is nothing to confirm that the charger is USB-C Power Delivery compliant, which therefore raises a risk if the TPN-CA02 charger is used on another device.

I have found two solutions that meet my requirements of charging the Spectre Notebook.
1) a non-HP charger; the Google 45W USB-C Power Adapter
2) the HP Z32 31.5" 4K IPS UHD Monitor
1) Altough a non-HP charger, the Google 45W USB-C Power Adapter (SKU GA00196-GB) is provided with a Pixelbook Chroebook and is available from the Google Store and other stores. Specification includes:
- 45W power output / USB Power Delivery 3.0
- 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A, 20V/2.25A
The Spectre selects 15V and charges OK. So, my faith in the Spectre and it's USB-C compliance is restored. Thank you HP.
2) With faith restored, I went further and purchased the HP Z32 31.5" 4K IPS UHD Monitor (Part 1AA81A4#ABU). Apart from having excellent display capability, the monitor incorporates both USB-C charging and a USB hub.
So, using a single USB-C to USB-C cable (that supports Alt mode DisplayPort), I have a 4K external monitor, a USB hub, and laptop charging at the same time. The Spectre Notebook selects 15V and charges / runs well. This is what USB-C is all about! Once again, well done HP.
Hope this helps

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.
I understand that you have an HP Spectre 13-v051na laptop. I read that the USB C port on the laptop does not work for charging.
I suggest you not to use the non-HP USB-C chargers for your HP laptop.
I would like to know the following information to assist you better:
- Is your laptop not charging with the original charger (HP Part No: 848067-002)?
Let me know. Cheers!

Hi MKazi
Thank you for your reply.
The HP supplied original charger (HP Part No; 848067-002) does indeed work and charges using any of the three USB-C ports on the Spectre.
I understand that HP would recommend using only an HP charger. So my question was about buying additional HP chargers that I could use for my Spectre and also then use for my non-HP devices, on the basis that the HP charger would be USB-C Power Delivery compliant.
I would have thought that it was easy to get another charger from HP, but it is not.
Example (1); if I Google 'HP Part No; 848067-002' or 'HP Spare; 848293-850' or 'Model; TPN-CA02', I get no results that point to something I can buy from the HP Accessories Store in the UK.
Example (2); if I read HP's document on USB Type C (see the interesting document at https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c04723006);
- the Hosts or computers section does not confirm that my Spectre will draw power from a USB PD compliant charger.
- the Accessories (dongles, adapters, and docks) section lists several HP chargers and the document implies that they are all are USB PD compliant, but can I be assured that these chargers are USB-PD compliant and therefore able to work with non-HP devices (that claim to be USB-PD compliant)?
The whole point of USB-C is that it is a standard and that reputable suppliers implement it. I chose the HP Spectre ahead of other devices on the basis that the Spectre came with three USB-C ports, and by implication was future-proofed for a number of years.
Hope this explains my issue.

You're welcome. 🙂
Thanks for replying with the information.
You may reachout to our HP phone support for ordering additional HP chargers. I have also sent you a private message with the contact information.
Secondly, the laptop came with a 45 W USB Type-C™ adapter. So if the external device uses similar power output, then the HP charger should work fine with it.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions. Cheers!
