HP USB-C Dock G5
Microsoft Windows 11

I have an HP Universal Dock G5 (5TW10UT#aba).  I just bought a new laptop (HP 15-ep1035nr). The laptop has two USB-C Thunderbolt ports. I have two external displays connected to the dock via DisplayPort connections and I have the laptop connected to the dock via USB-C. I cannot get the dock to pass video to the external monitors via the USB-C connection to the dock, nor can I get the laptop to charge via the USB-C connection.

I can access audio via the dock, and I can access a USB-A device (e.g. a USB hard drive) via the dock, but no video out through the dock nor the ability the charge the laptop from the dock.

I updated my BIOS, video drivers, and Thunderbolt drivers. According to HP, my laptop should be compatible with the USB-C Dock G5.

I called HP tech support today and they tried to pass me off to the HP Smart Friend service (but I didn't want to have to pay to get this resolved).

Can anyone help?

Yes, you can try. I'm using HP USB-C G5 right now and tested on my Dell Inspiron 2-in-1 7000 series, my HP Envy 15-ee0047nr machine, my HP Omen 15-dc0071tx and this one which is HP Ellitebook 850 G5.

I can say the dock is fully compatible with my Dell, my HP Envy (only 63W charger), and my HP 840 G5 but NOT the Omen, I can have monitors by no charge (I knew that) because my HP Omen uses 200W charger.

Regards.

From the HP sales rep who helped me order the laptop and from Question 11 on this page:

HP ENVY Laptop 15-ep1035nr| HP® Official Store.

"What dock this compatible with? The thunderbolt dock G2 or USB-C G5?

Sorry I can't comment about that. I know for sure the HP USB-C Gen 5 won't compatible with your machine which uses 200W charger.

Yes, it is true that this laptop comes with a 200W AC adapter with a barrel plug, and that the HP Universal Dock G5 comes with a 120W adapter, but I do not believe that 200W needs to be delivered to the laptop USB-C port in order to charge the laptop. The G5 dock provides up to 100W (20 volts at 5 amps) and I believe that is sufficient to charge this laptop.

P.S. I appreciate you trying to help me with this problem. I now suspect that the G5 dock I have may be defective. I am attempting to obtain a replacement.

I received a replacement G5 dock and now the monitors work fine, but I still cannot charge my laptop via the USB-C interface. It appears your comment about requiring a 200W adapter is correct.

Banhien, Thanks for helping me on this!

No, I tested the HP USB-C G5 dock on my machines. The dock worked on my Envy 15-ee0047nr (65W charger),  Dell 13"  inspiron 2-in-1, HP Eliebook 840 G5 but it could not charge my Omen 15-dc  because my Omen uses 200W charger, others use 65W chargers. That means wattage rating for the dock is too low, it can charge my Omen during idle or off.

Hope this makes sense.

Regards.
