Laptop Victus by HP 16,1″ Gaming 16-d1

Hi,

I have problem with my HP Victus. It is freezing in irregular intervals without any common reason. By freezing i mean literally freezed screen, no reaction to any input, even caps or num-lock doesn't work. Only way to bring it back to life is by holding power button for few seconds. After it, it boots normally.

Unfortunately there are no errors, BSOD or system logs entries that may have lead to source of problem.

What I tried so far:

  • installed latest windows updates
  • installed latest drivers available
  • updated bios
  • sfc /scannow, DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  • bios reset (with holding Windows + V during power up)
  • run built in diagnostic (including few hours run on memory) but it shows everything is ok
  • disabled Hyper-Threading (i would call it test in progress, so far 5 days without issues still freezes, update below)

Freezes are not related to high temperatures or high system load (it even seems as it is related to low load, as it so far never hang during heavy load or gaming).

About intervals - it sometimes works perfectly for even 2 weeks to freeze 5 times a day just after that.

Any idea what it might be? Anyone had similar issues?

I can confirm that disabling Hyper-Threading didn't help. It froze once yesterday and once today (causing corruption of file that was open...).

Any suggestions?

Did you solve ?  I have the same problem and it only happens when playing games or rendering. I Dont know why

Unfortunately no. With disabled HT freezes occurs less often and I'm making preparations to send my laptop to service.

I found topic on Asus forum (https://rog-forum.asus.com/t5/intel-700-600-series/freezing-on-idle-or-browinsg-i-think-low-usage-on...) that seems similar to my issues but there is no option to disable C-states in Victus bios so no way to check for sure.

But i don't think your issue is similar - its quite opposite as in my case everything is rock solid on heavy load and freezes occur only in low load conditions (browsing web, pure desktop, editing code)

You can use the free and safe version of the utility titled WhoCrashed? to analyze the crash to see what the cause is.

https://www.resplendence.com/download/whocrashedSetup.exe

You will have to configure your Windows OS to provide mem crash  dump files .

Hi Erico,

thanks for advice, i was loosing hope that there is anyone left on this forum 🙂

I checked docs of this app and I'm afraid it won't help in my case - as I described above my freezes looks like "freeze-frame", if there is any sound playing then it will loop latest sample making buzzing sound and only way to unfreeze is to turn off with 5 seconds hold on power button. So there is no Blue/Black screen or error to catch/dump.

But as I have nothing to loose i will give it a try and post if it will catch something.

---- update

App installed, i followed instruction of enabling full dumps, and have 300+GB of fee space on system drive.

I will post next update after next freeze.

I don't even get a blue screen, so I can't see what the error is from any minidump program, Just freezing.... No fps drop just freezing at rendering or gaming 😞 We probably use the same PC

Nope.

I doubt that we have the same PC or laptop.

I have an  HP Spectre laptop and a self-built beast of a Gaming PC.

Unfortunately as I expected those freezes don't produce dumps.

I had one real Blue Screen on monday during update of GPU drivers, this one recorded dump (REFERENCE_BY_POINTER) and its only one visible in WhoCrashed.

All freezes (i had few this week and even more week before) stop execution of anything and don't generate dumps.

Any further idea?

A lack of memory dump reports is leading me towards  considering that it could be a hardware issue.

Have you run the extensive memory test and the long system test?

Have you considered doing a clean install of the operating system?

I know it is a pain, but to simplify matters you can clone the current OS to an external disk so you won't lose anything.
