Hi everyone,

I’ve been searching extensively for a solution to the Hall sensor issue and, unfortunately, everything points to the same conclusion: the only fix is replacing the Hall sensor itself.

What’s extremely disappointing is that HP has not acknowledged this as a manufacturing fault, despite the large number of users reporting the exact same problem. I’ve owned my laptop for just 13 months and was forced to disconnect the Hall sensor simply to keep the device usable.

To make matters worse, I’m based in South Africa, and the only replacement I can find costs around R1,950. Considering this laptop cost R25,000, I don’t believe it’s reasonable for customers to carry the cost of a clearly widespread hardware failure.

Has anyone had success getting HP to cover the repair or replacement of the faulty Hall sensor, either partially or in full?

Any advice or shared experiences would be appreciated.

Hi @NEMY_ZA

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I can understand how disappointing it feels to face a hardware fault just outside the first year of ownership, especially after investing in a high‑end device. You’ve already done a lot of searching and even disconnected the sensor to keep the laptop usable, which shows real determination. Let’s go through what can be done from a practical standpoint.

Steps you can take

Confirm the fault through diagnostics

  • Run the built‑in HP Hardware Diagnostics tool (accessible by pressing F2 at startup).
  • This helps verify whether the Hall sensor or another component is triggering the error.
Guide: Using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

Check for BIOS and driver updates

  • Sometimes sensor communication errors can be reduced with firmware updates.
  • Visit the HP support page for your Victus model and install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.

Battery and lid sensor behavior

  • The Hall sensor is tied to lid‑open/close detection. If disconnected, make sure to disable sleep on lid close in Windows to avoid unexpected shutdowns.
  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does, and set it to “Do nothing.”

Replacement options

  • If you decide to replace the sensor, ensure you purchase the correct part number for your Victus 16s0xxx series.
  • HP’s parts store can help identify compatible components.

Temporary workaround

  • Since you’ve disconnected the sensor, adjusting Windows power settings as mentioned above will keep the laptop functional until you decide on repair.

By verifying the fault with diagnostics, ensuring BIOS and drivers are up to date, and adjusting power settings, you can keep the laptop stable while you weigh the cost of replacement. The HP Parts Store is the most reliable place to confirm availability and compatibility of the Hall sensor for your model.
