HP Wireless Optical Comfort Mo
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So I've had my HP Wireless Optical Comfort Mouse (XA964AA) for about 6 years now and it has never given me issues. We've been through thick and thin! A few days ago, however, I found that it completely ceased to work.

Now, keep in mind that the mouse will very randomly work when I plug in the dongle and switch the mouse on. Sometimes it will work for a few minutes and stop; other times it will work for a second or two and then stop. It does not work consistently, though. I've tried the following solutions...

I know I replaced the batteries a few weeks before, but I went ahead and put a new set of Energizers just in case (in both cases, the scroll light lit up green, indicating healthy batteries). I switched the mouse off and on multiple times, pressed the Connect button several times, and moved the USB dongle receiver to all the other USB ports. No luck!

Then I began troubleshooting through Windows. I checked the Device Manager and saw that the computer did detect the dongle, labeled 'HP Link-5 micro dongle' every time I plugged it back in. I checked the mouse settings and saw that it was detecting the mouse under input devices, but there was still no movement from my mouse.

I've been wracking my brain the past few days trying to figure out a solution - I haven't made any software/hardware changes to my laptop to have caused the device to stop working like that.

I know this mouse is cheap and very old now. I've been debating whether or not to just go ahead and buy a new one, but I feel like it's a solution I can solve and save a few dollars with.

Hey there! @JQChacon,

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!

I understand the wireless mouse stops responding intermittently.

Don't worry I'd like to help you out.

Did you make any changes to the wireless mouse?

Is the other wireless mouse turned on?

Have you tried checking the mouse with new batteries?

Do you get any error when connecting the wireless or wired mouse on your PC?

As you mentioned the wireless mouse stops responding intermittently.

Can you please explain the issue in brief as I did not understand your complete query.

As you mentioned that when you search for the wireless mouse you are getting the wireless mouse which is not connected to your PC.

Try Re-syncing the keyboard and mouse connection for receivers.

If the first wireless mouse is not set to default you might get this error.

Try making the 1st mouse by default and check if it helps.

In the search box type devices and printer, open devices and printer select the wireless mouse which you want to make it as default.

Right-click on the wireless mouse and select set it as default. Now check if you get the same error.

If the issue still persists uninstall the wireless mouse from device manager and check if it helps.

1.Using the search box on the taskbar, search for and open Device Manager.

2.In the Device Manager window, double-click mice and other pointing devices, right-click the name of the wireless mouse and then select uninstall.

3. Restart your PC.

The drivers should automatically get installed once you restart your PC.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot wireless mouse issues with your laptop.
