Hi @NeilI5,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the HP Pavilion TouchSmart 15 Notebook’s disk repair utility has been running for several days without completing successfully, it might indicate a serious issue with the hard drive or the system's file structure. Here's a structured approach to deal with this issue:
**1. Abort the Repair Process
- Press and hold the power button until the computer shuts down.
- Wait a few seconds, then turn the computer back on.
- As the computer restarts, repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8) to access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
- Choose Safe Mode to start Windows with minimal drivers and services. This can sometimes help bypass issues with disk repair.
**2. Check Disk Health
- Once in Safe Mode, open a Command Prompt with administrative privileges:
- Press Windows Key + X and select Command Prompt (Admin).
- Type chkdsk /f and press Enter. This will schedule a disk check to fix errors on the next restart.
**3. Backup Your Data
- If possible, back up your important data. Connect the hard drive to another computer using an external hard drive enclosure or use a live Linux USB to access and transfer files.
- If you can’t access your files normally, you might use data recovery software like Recuva or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard to recover important files before proceeding with more intensive repairs.
**4. Perform a Hard Drive Diagnostic
- Restart your computer and press ESC repeatedly to access the Startup Menu.
- Select F2 to enter the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool.
- Run a full diagnostic test on the hard drive to check for physical issues or failure.
**5. Consider Reinstalling Windows
- If the disk check and diagnostics suggest significant issues, you might need to reinstall Windows.
- Create a Windows installation USB using the Windows Media Creation Tool.
- Boot from the Windows installation media and select Repair your computer.
- You can attempt a Startup Repair or System Restore if available.
- If these options fail, you may need to proceed with a full Clean Install. Be aware that this will erase all data on the drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
