HP Recommended

My displaylink G2 docking station stopped working this afternoon. No charge to laptop, no power to usb and no monitor display. How do I tell if the problem is with the dock or the power adapter?  I don't have an HP laptop with the same input charge port anymore. The dock is $300 to replace (with adapter) and the adapter $50 so I'd like to know what to replace.
