HP Pavilion 15-cx0670nd
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I recently bought a new HP Pavilion laptop combined with a HP G2 120W docking station to replace my old desktop:

The dock works very well for my monitor, keybord, mouse, ethernet and speakers. However there is no power being transferred towards my laptop via the UBS-C 3.1 port.  I did expect that the power supply from the docking station would be somewhat insufficient during heavy use, the dock was specified to provide a maximum output of 100W (20V-5A) while my normal AC-charger provides 150W (19.5V-7.7A), but would hopefully be enough for normal use. However, it appears that to no power is being transferred at all. The power delivery for me was one of the key selling features of this dock so that I do not have to drag around my charger(s).

Beside searching the internet and this community,  I tried the following to enable the power delivery

  • updated BIOS
  • checked the BIOS for any features which needed enabling (not found)
  • updated all drivers via hp support assistant
  • Installed the latest HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 Firmware Installer

I want to check whether I will have the same problem with our other (Dell) laptops with lower power rating, but for this I first need to get a USB-C to USB-A adapter.

Thank you in advance for the support!

Mark

@Mstelt

From its specs, it clearly says

Compatible with HP Elite x2 1012 G1; HP Elite x2 1012 G2; HP Pro x2 612 G2; HP EliteBook Folio G1; HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2; HP EliteBook x360 1020 G2; HP EliteBook 1040 G4; HP EliteBook 800 G5; HP EliteBook 700 G5; HP ProBook 600 G4; HP ProBook 400 G5; ZBook 14u G5; ZBook 15u G5

And your machine is a Pavilion 15 which is NOT compatible that means some functions won't work.

Regards..

Dear Mr. BH,

Thank you for the quick response, it is very much appriciated!

Unfortunately I did not find the Pavilion 15 not in any of the supported lists for docking stations. Does that mean that in general the HP Pavilion series is not capable of such 'power over usb' charging? I'm trying to understand the problem and whether I would encounter the same problem with a universal docking station.

Thanks,

Mark
