My Hp elitebook 840 is currently with zero power. When I plugged in charger, the power button and caps lock button lights kept blinking constantly. Even after removing the battery, they kept blinking fast. I need help because this is started suddenly and the PC can't start either.

Hello Ericod,

The issue you're experiencing with your HP EliteBook 840, where the power button and caps lock button lights are blinking but the device won't start, can be concerning. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. Hard Reset:

    • Disconnect the charger, and remove the battery if it’s removable.
    • Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
    • Reconnect the charger (without the battery, if removable) and try to power on the laptop.
  2. Check the Charger and Power Source:

    • Ensure the charger is functioning correctly. Test it on another HP device if available, or try a different charger that is compatible with your laptop.
    • Plug the charger directly into a wall outlet instead of a power strip or surge protector.
  3. LED Blink Codes:

    • The blinking lights might represent an error code. Generally, a blink code at the caps lock can indicate a specific hardware issue (for example, memory or processor issues).
    • For HP EliteBook 840, the blinking Caps Lock light is commonly used to signal different hardware issues. These codes can assist you in diagnosing which part of the laptop is experiencing a problem. Here’s what some of the common blink codes indicate:

      • 2 Blinks (BIOS Error): This indicates that the main area of the BIOS has become corrupted, and there is no recovery binary image available. It is recommended to perform a BIOS recovery using the Crisis Recovery method, or contact HP support for assistance.

      • 3 Blinks (Hardware Error): Usually signals an issue with the memory or processor. Specifically, it may mean the embedded controller has timed out waiting for the BIOS to return from memory initialization, suggesting a possible need to reseat or replace the memory modules.

      • 4 Blinks (Thermal Error): This signifies a thermal issue, indicating overheating. Overheating can cause the device to shut down as a protective measure. Ensure that cooling vents are unobstructed and check for any dust build-up.

      • 5 Blinks (System Board Error): Points to a system board or motherboard failure. It may involve power issues requiring the system board to be checked and potentially replaced.

  4. Inspect RAM and other components:

    • If you are comfortable, try reseating the RAM. Remove it carefully and then reseat it properly in the slot.
    • You might also want to check other removable components like the hard drive if accessible.
  5. Allow the Battery to Charge:

    • Sometimes a completely drained battery may need some time to charge before the laptop can power on. Let it charge for a while and attempt to power on again.

Let me know if this helps!!
