@Janetfan4eva, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Incorrect Character Input on HP Notebook PCs!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
If your HP Laptop 15-dy2xxx is typing wrong letters or numbers, there may be two potential issues causing this: the num lock key or an incorrect keyboard language setting. Here are the steps to troubleshoot these problems:
Check the Num Lock Key
Sometimes, pressing the num lock key unintentionally can change the keyboard mode, making it function as a number pad.
Open a word-processing program and type the word jump.
- If jump is displayed correctly, your keyboard is in its default mode.
- If 140* appears instead, your keyboard is configured as a number pad.
Press the num lock key to toggle back to the normal keyboard mode. For some models, you might need to press fn + num lock.
Type jump again to confirm that the keyboard configuration is corrected.
Set the Keyboard Language
The keyboard language might be set to the wrong one, causing unexpected characters to appear.
Search for and open Language settings on your computer.
Ensure that the Windows display language matches your preferred language.
Adjust the Preferred languages:
- Use the up arrow icon to move your preferred language to the top of the list.
- Select and remove any unwanted languages.
Select your Keyboard:
- In Windows 11, check under Language options and choose your keyboard or add a new one.
- In Windows 10, select Keyboard and opt for "Use language list (recommended)" under Override for default input method.
By following these steps, your keyboard should be set to the correct configuration to avoid typing incorrect characters.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
