Wanting to replace the HDD with an SSD.  What format can I install?

Will a standard 2.5 inch ssd like from Crucial work?

The crucial analyzer software does not work for this laptop.

Hi bobalston,

I have past experience with SSD upgrades. I do have to inform you that there really is no reason to know the SATA port revision. As long as you get a SATA III SSD (which is basically like the only type available), it will work

Just make sure to either clone your existing HDD or copy important files and recopy them back to the SSD after. Don't worry about a Windows 10 product key as Windows 10 is digital and is embedded into the motherboard.

Hi @bobalston,

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums.  After reading your post I see that you need assistance regarding installing an SSD. It will be a delight to assist you here.

Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you check the product specs and service manual of the computer?

For now please perform these steps:

  • Product specs of the computer: http://hp.care/2DWbOMA (HP 15-r210dx Notebook PC Product Specifications)

  • Service manual: http://hp.care/2urM4pW (service and maintenance guide)
  • Refer t0npage 59-61 for the supported list of hard drives with part numbers and steps on how to remove and replace the hard drive.

  • This computer does not have any SSD slot like M.2 or other types of SSD slots. So SSD upgrades for this machine may not be an option. I have done my research here and am being honest about it by keeping your best interest in mind without beating around the bush.
  • Hope this answers your question.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

In the email thread below, "Perry-1960" writes that he has successfully replaced the original HDD with a SSD.

Unfortunately, nothing in the documentation on this specific laptop mentions anything about SSD compatibility.

Also after talking with multiple people on the phone at HP, who seemed to not know or simply referred me to someone else who "show be able to help me".  I got no information from that route.

It would be nice if HP would state specifically that the product does support SSDs.

Hi @bobalston,

I reviewed the post. Thanks for the quick response. It is great to have you back. I admire your patience and resilience coupled with extensive research to figure things out. Kudos to you for that, I understand where you come from.

The notebook does not support SSDs and it has not been tested by HP. No ambiguity in this regard. I am giving you an honest answer without beating around the bush. The service manual is clear about it.

You are a valued Hp customer and It has been an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. Trust me I've done all I can to assist you here, after doing my research.

I disagree with your assertion that the PC does not support SSDs just because the manual doesn't speak to this issue.

And in fact, one poster has upgraded to an SSD and has apparently had good success.

So no I do not consider this a resolution to my initial post and do not feel you have the ability to resolve it.

Hi DavidSMP and bobalston,

I believe there is a misunderstanding. The laptop's Maintenance and Service Guide show that the laptop utilizes Serial ATA or SATA. This means that all SATA drives should work in this laptop, regardless of whether it is an HDD or an SSD. However, the problem is that the manual doesn't specify the SATA port revision.

Theoretically, all newer versions of SATA drives are backwards compatible with older port revisions therefore you could literally get any SATA SSD as long as it fits. However keep in mind that the theoretical speeds advertised may not work on your system because it may have an older SATA port revision.

So yes, the 2.5 in SATA SSD should work!

Hope this answers your question,

Hi @bobalston,

I read the post. HP does not recommend upgrades. I understand the situation.

You may need to tweak your notebook to include a caddy and then connect an SSD which HP does not recommend.

We go by the service manual which is the guide.

Thanks and have a blessed week. 🙂

Hi DavidSMP,

Why does HP not recommend upgrades? I mean from my understanding, it doesn't void the warranty as long as you don't induce accidental damage. Furthermore, he is asking about replacing the HDD with the SSD, not adding an additional hard drive.

Thanks KEM579.  That helps.  Now if there was just a way to find out the SATA port revision.

I would also like to hear from anyone else who has had success in upgrading to a SSD.
