HP 17" model ca1008cy hinges so tight they destroyed the keyboard cover and rendered the laptop unusable, but it took until just past the warranty period.  I am repairing it for my sister.  The keyboard cover can be replaced and the hinges loosened and lubricated with silicone grease.  My sister assumed the lid was supposed to work that tightly and didn't question anything until it was too late!  It's possible tight hinges can work well for a metal case - but they were way too tight for a plastic case - HP needs to readjust their hinge tolerances for plastic.  Right hinge screw plastic tap holes destroyedRight hinge screw plastic tap holes destroyed   Left side worse; chunk chewed out of top sideLeft side worse; chunk chewed out of top side

This is not something an end user will usually be able to diagnose and fix before it's too late.
