Hi @Mgdrobert,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for explaining the issue. Based on your description, your HP laptop shows the following behaviour:
- Charging light turns orange for 30 seconds, then solid white
- Battery status says “Not charging” even when plugged in
This usually points to a battery communication issue, a power adapter fault, or a BIOS/power management glitch. Let’s walk through a few steps to fix it.
Troubleshooting for “Plugged in, Not Charging”
1. Perform a Hardware Reset
- Shut down the laptop.
- Unplug the charger.
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
- Plug the charger back in and turn on the laptop.
This clears residual power and resets battery communication.
2. Check the AC Adapter and Charging Port
- Use the original HP charger.
- Inspect the charging cable and port for dust or damage.
- Try a different wall outlet.
3. Update BIOS and Drivers
- Go to Official HP® Support.
- Enter your laptop model.
- Download and install the latest:
- BIOS update
- Chipset driver
- Battery and power management driver
4. Run HP Battery Check
Use HP Support Assistant:
- Open HP Support Assistant.
- Go to Battery > Battery Check.
- It will test battery health and charging status.
5. Reset Battery Driver (Windows)
- Press Win + X > Device Manager
- Expand Batteries
- Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery > Uninstall device
- Restart your laptop. Windows will reinstall the driver automatically
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
