HP Notebook - 15-da2009tu

About 9 months ago, my 3 year old laptop suddenly started getting a CMOS checksum invalid error message during bootup, and gradually started shutting down randomly. It used to last about 30 minutes without being plugged in before shutting down instantly to the point where it couldn't even be turned on without external power. I contacted support and replaced my battery, which fixed the issue, and I was advised to not run any heavy games on it, which i understand.

However, now, for about the last 2 weeks, the laptop has been shutting down randomly again, showing the same CMOS checksum invalid error. I did start playing Skyrim on it, on low settings and not for long, maybe about 30 minutes or so at a time, and it's been about a month since I started and today, the laptop lasted about 2 minutes without external power and when I turned it on again, it shut down almost instantly even though it had a battery percentage of about 90%.

I'm just confused as to how a brand new battery could be damaged to this extent in the span of 9 months, considering I did a lot more things on it before the battery change and it lasted more than 2 years, and what can I do to fix it? Another battery change?

Hi @StarStrandedKoi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand that you are having issues with getting a CMOS checksum invalid error.

The main battery also serves as the CMOS battery which maintains the system BIOS and clock settings.

You will have to replace the battery and you should just because it is beginning to swell and eventually will swell to the extent of causing stress to the notebook's internals and the case.

Battery swelling can be caused by leaving the notebook connected to A/C power and leaving the battery in a constant 100% charge state.

See this link for how to get the most life out of your notebook's battery.

If this does not help, I recommend you contact Phone support or the service center.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
