HP laptop won't turn on or charge

There's also always a light on the computer that turns on when I plug it in but it doesn't come on. I've checked to see if the wall outlet works. I'm gonna go buy a new charger tomorrow but does anyone know something about this? My wife was using it and noticed the battery was running low so she plugged it in, it didn't charge it and it died while she was using it. I would've uploaded a photo with this post but I wasn't able to.
