Common problems for Battery

Hi, my HP laptop was working fine before a recent trip, but now it won’t boot. The screen stays black and flashes bright white every few seconds. The charging light and power light come on, but there’s no HP logo, no fan noise, and no startup sounds. Caps Lock isn’t blinking either.

I’ve already tried hard resets and holding the power button for 20–60 seconds with no luck. The laptop was in a bag in a car trunk during travel, so I’m wondering if heat could have caused the issue.

Any ideas on what might be wrong or what else I can try?

Hi @HJ201,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your symptoms fit a POST / no video with power or possibly a power-related hardware issue:

  • Power lights on means the laptop is getting some power.

  • No HP logo, no startup sounds, and no fan noise suggest it is not completing normal startup/POST.

  • A black screen with flashing/bright white can point to a display issue, a loose internal connection, or failed critical hardware.

  • Heat or movement during travel can contribute to loose connections, and HP specifically notes to inspect for damage, vibration, movement, or overheating-related issues.

What HP recommends next:

Disconnect all external devices. Remove USB devices, docks, external displays, printers, and storage devices.

Check the power source and adapter.

  • Verify the AC outlet works.

  • Inspect the AC adapter and power port for damage or debris.

  • If possible, test with a verified working HP AC adapter.

Try external display testing: HP recommends testing with an external monitor (HDMI/DisplayPort/VGA if available). If external video works, the issue may be with the internal display or display cable.

Check for physical/heat-related signs. Inspect for:

  • warped chassis

  • liquid exposure

  • impact damage

  • unusual burnt smell

  • dust/debris in vents

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (if possible): Restart and quickly press Esc, then F2 to launch HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI. This can help isolate hardware failures if the system can respond at all.

Reseat-related service may be needed. The HP guidance says loose internal connections can cause:

  • no video

  • startup failure

  • memory issues

  • storage issues

Examples include reseating memory, storage, display cable, or power-related connections.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
