HP EliteBook 840 G3 Base Model Notebook PC

This information may be useful for anyone who has a HP Elitebook laptop and an ultraslim dock and is having problems getting the dock to charge the laptop.  My solution was number 2.

I'm not a fan of prolonged answers so this a quick read to get you where you need to be...

1) Check the docking station charger, typically the wattage has to be sufficient for your laptop,  65w is likely to be the one you need.

2) If the dock was bought used, check that it has a HP charger and not a Dell.  The voltage, wattage and connector will  be the same but, both Dell and HP use SMARTIP technology which is a hardware/software system that identifies the adapter to the laptop. If you try to use a Dell charger on a HP setup, it simply will not work you'll see the power light on the dock light up but it will not charge the battery - nothing you can do but get yourself an official HP charger, apparently its a safety feature!

3) Lastly, it is possible that a pinout is faulty on either the laptop or the docking station, take a photo of the pins with your phone and zoom in to see if any of the pins are damaged. This is the least likely solution but worth checking.

Thats it. I hope it helps and prevents you from spending hours searching through other forums.

Good luck
