Laptop has 8 GB of RAM on one memory module, with one empty slot. Can I add a second 8GB module, to raise the total to 16GB, or will I have to use two identical new modules?  And what would be the specs for that memory?

Hi:

Yes, you can add a second 8 GB memory module for a total of 16 GB.

Below is the link to the service manual.

Get a matching memory module from a reputable manufacturer.

I have zipped up and attached a free utility below, that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the memory module currently installed.
