hp spectre 13-4022 x360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I bought my HP spectre laptop about 2 year ago and my warranty has just expired 5 months ago.

Just yesterday, I was typing on microsoft word and out of a sudden, my screen went pitch black. The laptop was plugged in and charging at that time but I couldn't turn it back on. However, I did manage to switch it on for a minute or so the next day, with the screen indicating a "Windows Update. Do not turn the computer off" but once I connected the adapter, my laptop turned off again and I was unable to turn it back on since.

I took my laptop to a PC repair store and was told that the motherboard was burned quite badly! They also informed me that they may not have a proper device to extract data files from the hard drive.

I've read similar accounts on this forum about this topic and the fee to get a replacement seems to be very high. I am a college student in an urgent need for a solution to get the data from my laptop and a motherboard replacement! Please help!

Thank you!

Its an NVME/PCIe M.2 disk which is good news/bad news. Good news is it is very very fast. Bad news is they will not connect easily to another computer with a simple usb adapter as will the M.2 SATA disks.

You would have to have a computer with multiple NVME M.2 ports like the Zbook 15 G3 (I happen to have one)

or a desktop with a pcie adapter card to get the data off or just replace the motherboard and reuse your M.2 disk?

Not my place to question or lecture but if you are a college student with important documents you are always living on the edge only having it in one place; you need to get a good cloud storage app or an external backup of some sort.

This is the motherboard:

Equipped with an Intel Core i7-5500U 2.40-GHz (SC turbo up to 3.00-GHz) processor (1600- MHz FSB, 4.00-MB L2 cache, dual core, 15 W), 8.0-GB of system memory, and the Windows 10 or Windows 8 Standard operating system 801505-501

You may need the Service Manual:

Manual

HP Parts Store does not have it (motherboard) in stock.

eBay shipped from China:

If you can remove the motherboard there are also shops that will rework it at the chip level and get it running again. I have no connection to these guys and they are just one of many on ebay. This one has particularly good feedback:

Post back with any more questions but please Accept as Solution if this is the answer you needed.
