HP touchsmart 15 fails to upgrade from windows 8.1 to 10. Everything downloads ok, just fails to install at about 50%.

Thank you for the reply. I ran a full UEFI on the memory and hard drive, then did a complete clean install and it still failed. Somewhere I had seen a statement to be sure to uninstall itunes. I uninstalled itunes and did a complete clean install once again, and it actually installed and is running the way it should. It's still hard to believe that itunes was the culprit, and not just a coincidence that this happened. Thanks again for the help.

You want to run a full UEFI diagnostic on the hard drive and memory. The laptop should run Windows 10 fine.  You may find you need to do a clean install rather than an in-place upgrade.

If you did a complete clean install iTunes was not part of the problem. You add iTunes after a clean install. But I'm happy you seem to have resolved.
