Hi @danzopa85,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Victus laptop's trackpad is not working consistently and doesn't even show up in the Device Manager when it's not working, there could be several potential reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow.
Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve hardware and driver-related issues.
Check for Physical Damage: Ensure there is no physical damage to the trackpad or any debris that might be interfering with its operation.
Function Key: Some laptops have a function key (e.g., F5, F6) that can disable the trackpad. Try pressing the appropriate function key (usually with an icon resembling a trackpad) to enable it.
BIOS/UEFI Settings: Access your laptop's BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing a key like F2 or Delete during startup) and check if the trackpad is disabled there. Enable it if necessary.
Windows Updates: Ensure your operating system is up-to-date by installing all available Windows updates.
HP Support Assistant: Use the HP Support Assistant software to check for any HP-specific updates or driver updates for your laptop. Sometimes, HP releases custom drivers that can improve hardware functionality.
Rollback or Reinstall Drivers: If you recently updated your trackpad drivers and the issue started after the update, try rolling back the driver to a previous version or uninstalling the driver and letting Windows reinstall it automatically.
To roll back drivers:
- Open the Device Manager.
- Locate the trackpad under "Mice and other pointing devices."
- Right-click on the trackpad and select "Properties."
- Go to the "Driver" tab and click "Roll Back Driver" if the option is available.
To reinstall drivers:
- Uninstall the trackpad driver from the Device Manager.
- Restart your laptop, and Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
Check for Viruses/Malware: Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to rule out any malware or viruses causing the issue.
System Restore: If the problem started recently and you're unable to pinpoint the cause, you can try using System Restore to revert your computer to a previous state when the trackpad was working correctly.
Hardware Issue: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there is a hardware problem with the trackpad or its connection to the motherboard.
Remember to back up your important data before making any major changes to your system, such as driver updates or system restores, to prevent data loss.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
