I want to upgrade the RAM on my old HP 625, the advice pages on the HP website advise that the max RAM is 16 GB for the Windows 7 home Premium Operating System. However when on the Chat line yesterday the HP rep identified that the max RAM was only 8GB, in searching for suitable sources (eg Mr Memory, Crucial) they also identified max for my laptop was 8GB. Can you please advise

The existing SODIMMS (1GB+2GB) as fitted when purchased have a clock speed of 1066MHz. It was suggested that I should go for a higher clock speed (eg 1600 MHz)  by one of the memory suppliers as this would greatly improve overall performance of the system. Faster speed always sounds good but will it work? The processor is the AMD athlon II P360 Dual core .

Where do you get information from ? From its manual (page 2), it supports 8GB

            http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02585536.pdf

Crucial also confirms that

          https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/hp---compaq/hp-625

Since you have to replace both slots, you can use lower voltage RAM (or DDR3L) which is easy to find and cheaper too:

Machine will automatically downgrade to 1066MHz.

Many thanks for your response Banhien, the information re the 16GB statement comes direct from the HP web site.

More specifically "HP625 Notebook PC -How to"

Upgrading RAM: - Verify how much memory you can add

                                    - Confirm maximum memory supported by Windows Version

                                     -Windows 7,  Home Premium    ---------------   16 GB

For the Home Basic the figure is 8GB.

I agree that the Crucial site identifies max RAM as 8GB. This is part of the reason I raised the question and wished to identify which source of info I should trust, the query about clock speed choice was also raised by a live chat query with HP when It was suggested to me that fitting a SODIMM with a  'higher clock speed item would improve the speed performance of the  PC. In essence this machine has never been particularly fast and apart from altering the Start up settings and dumping unused apps I am hoping that more RAM will allow Win 7 to perform better

Well, now it is up to your decision. Follow the BOOK or not.
