Just recently I moved back to using this laptop and it has always had issues with locking up that were easily fixed. Now however, upon restarting the device and after the normal start up slow down, it remains slowed down at 100% usage. I attempted to install drivers for a simple mouse and after an hour of doing so, it has yet to install. The task manager locks up, every application opened locks up, command prompt locks up, and the task bar at the bottom remains locked. I attempted to reinstall the drivers for the disk, reconnect the hard disk, disable/enable the disk, and the methods shown in https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/100-disk-usage/td-p/6693373
I am unsure of any other actions I can take besides installing a new drive or a new laptop, as it is over four years old now but with decent hardware still. The battery needs replacing as it dies in around 70 minutes from full charge, so I am unsure if this can be causing any disk issues. It also struggles to just run Windows Remote Desktop Connection as it sometimes stops responding due to the disk usage.
Any information regarding this would be helpful, but I believe it is just time for a new one.

Hi,
Most likely the Hard Drive has a problem
The best idea is to replace the Hard Drive with a 2.5" SATA3 SSD. It will give an amazing boost to the everyday performance of the PC for a low cost. You can install from your preferred brand and capacity
Example
On page 40 of the service manual you can see the steps to replace the drive
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06525445.pdf
You can create a bootable USB drive on another PC and then use to reinstall Windows 10 on the SSD
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Once installed allow Windows to completly update and it will find the necessary drivers for the machine.
Hope it helps,
David
