HP ProBook 450 G1
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

For some context, I have an HP Probook 450 G1 that I got from my friend that didn't have a ram or a power supply but hey, I got it for free so I'm not complaining. He said that the SATA port looked damaged but the pins were still intact. I don't want to risk my files on a janky SATA port that looked like it barely functioned, so I turned my attention to "DVD to Hard Drive" Caddys that I seen used to add extra storage to old laptops. My question is can I make a "DVD to Hard Drive" caddy my main drive, I.E. boot windows off of it. I have read around and people are giving me mixed messages, telling me that it will work by just changing the configuration in the BIOS, but then other people are telling me it won't work period. A swift response would be appreciated as I was planning on ordering the parts tonight to fix the laptop up.

Negative. A drive placed in an optical caddy will run at a reduced speed and will not be bootable.

Do you know any other way to get storage that is bootable on the laptop in question besides using external sources such as an external hard drive.

HP Recommended

No it is going to boot from the SATA port in the 2.5 inch bay as the only port intended for storage drives.
