HP 15-g094sa Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR)
My hard drive has failed a quick test after an imminent smart disk failure error message and I have a 24 digit code starting 9LXCIX- Computer is about 5 years old. Do I need to just get a new hard disk or is it possible it can be sorted. I also require a new battery as it is very low. Wondering if worth spending money on it all or whether to just get a new notebook. I have backed up.

Hi:
If you want to fix the notebook, you will have to replace the hard drive.
You can upgrade to a better performing 2.5" solid state drive (SSD) for better performance.
1 TB SSD:
New battery (has to be third party as HP doesn't sell a replacement battery for your notebook anymore).
Do a search by the HP part number and find a compatible aftermarket battery that references the battery part number you need.
The battery part numbers are: Depending on if your notebook has the 3 or 4 cell battery:
4-cell, 41-Whr, 2.8-Ah Li-ion battery 740715-001
3-cell, 31-Whr, 2.8-Ah Li-ion battery 746641-001
Once you have determined the cost of the battery, you can decide whether or not it is worth repairing or buying a new notebook.
Below is the link to the service manual:
Installing Windows would be free. You can make a bootable W10 installation flash drive with the media creation tool from the link below. Make the 64 bit installation media.
Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)
Since your notebook originally came with W8.1, when you get past the Install Now screen, select the version of W10 you want to install. Select W10 Home.
Then you will be asked to enter a product key. Select the 'I don't have a product key' option.
W10 will install and then activate after you are connected to the internet.
After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.

Thank you for such a detailed response. I will look in to all the options you advised including cutting my losses and buying a new computer. Is there much else that can go wrong with the laptop I wonder. It does seem to work ok although a bit slow and of course. Just hope it does not stop working too soon.

You're very welcome.
Usually, the hard drives go out and the batteries need to be replaced after a few years but that is normally it.
I've had one notebook die on me for some unknown reason.
It just would not boot up anymore, but the notebook was over 10 years old, so I got my use out of it.
Replacing the mechanical hard drive with a solid-state drive should help performance quite a bit.
You know how it goes though.
You'll fix it and a month later something else will happen. 😊
