This is my step sons laptop, it suddenly would not boot, when we ran diagnostics for the hard drive the smart check passed but the Long DST Failed.  It returned the following ID's.  Failure ID:  M8CF7W-9T7A88-XD7W3G-61CE03 and Product ID:  4ND16UA#ABA.  We are clueless as how to fix this, it seems the hard drive might have failed?  How do I find out where to order a new one and are there any tutorials to install a new hard drive, and what about the OS do I have to purchase it or are there free downloads?  Thanks in advance.

Hi:

This is the report generated by the failure code you posted, minus your notebook's serial number...

Yes, you will need to install a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Below is the link to the service manual, where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

You can buy any 2.5" x 7.0mm 1 TB hard drive you want.

For example...

You can also buy a better performing, normally more reliable solid state drive.   They are fairly expensive in the 1 GB size though.

500 GB is manageable...

Using another Windows PC you can use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.

Here is an info link for how to use that utility.

The cloud recovery tool may not work on the smaller 500 GB drive but there is another free way to reinstall W10 if the cloud recovery tool doesn't work.
