I have decided that I am going to need to replace my hard drive pretty soon as I am getting a SMART Hard Disk Error message upon starting.
What can yall reccommend? And I think I maybe doing it myself once I get the part? What should I be prepared to do to successfully get the laptop up and running after installing? For example, is it as easy as replacing and installing and starting the laptop back up with no other issues?

What is your HP Pavillion 15 notebook ? Please use the following instructions to find out the model/product of your machine:

HP uses HDD's for laptops and desktops from few suppliers (Seagate, Toshiba, HDS ...). But normally you can use any standard 2.5" HDD for laptops on the market today.
You may want to upgrade to SSD to get better performance. SSD's are more expensive than HDD's. Few examples
HDD's

SSD's (look at 2.5" only):

Hi,
Same thing as shown: in Product Name and Product Number:

Currently your machine has 750GB 5400RPM hard drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection. You can use higher/larger capacity (1TB or more) but for easy to manage, please do not try over 2TB,
Regards.
