Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hello.  Ive been getting a screen popping up on my HP laptop about a hard drive issue.  We did a system quick test and it came back that the hard drive smart check failed (with the processor check passing).  It gives a failure ID of RK7BVQ-7JC9N4-MFPWL1-609403.  I don't know what any of this means and how I can go about fixing it.  Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks,

Emily

Hi, Emily:

The error code reported, Hard Disk 1 SMART Hard Drive Detects Imminent Failure, means the hard drive is about to fail, or has failed, needs to be replaced, and the operating system reinstalled.

If you can still get into windows, back up any files you need to save onto a portable hard drive.

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.  The HDD R & R procedure can be found in chapter 5.

You may want to consider purchasing a better performing, normally more reliable solid state drive (SSD).

After you replace the hard drive, you should be able to reinstall Windows by using the media creation tool at the link below.

You will be able to create a bootable USB W10 installer. You will need an 8 GB flash drive for this.

After W10 installs, you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page...

Thank you so much!  Do you recommend trying to replace the hard drive yourself?  Or finding a local professional to handle it?

You're very welcome.

Take a look at the service manual with your notebook in front of you, and see if you think you are up to the task of doing the job yourself.

If you can, you will save a lot of money.

Here is a replacement drive I recommend if you can live with 500 GB of space.

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-500GB-Ultra-NAND-SATA/dp/B072R78B6Q/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1MVKOMMLAPNX8&key...

Here is a set of notebook pry tools to help you open the notebook to help prevent marring or scratching the plastic...

https://www.amazon.com/Kaisi-Ultrathin-Professional-Non-Abrasive-Anti-Static/dp/B015CMAJVK/ref=sr_1_...

So for about $70 you can fix it yourself, and it will most likely work better than before.

Reinstalling the operating system is free except for the cost of an 8 GB USB flash drive.

If you already have one, then you are all set.
