Common problems for Battery

Pavilion X360 15-bk163dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Just acquired this computer used. The battery does not charge when the laptop is running, but if it's asleep or off then the battery charges fine. It runs fine off either battery or ac adapter. I was thinking perhaps the ac adapter is faulty, but when I ran the HP Hardware Diagnostics with the laptop plugged in, it said that the battery has a blown fuse. However! The Hardware Diagnostics log file says "battery fuse may be shot," which doesn't sound so confident. And when I run Hardware Diagnostics with the laptop not plugged in, it says that the battery is fine. And the fact that the battery charges fine as long as the computer is not running, and the fact that the battery also holds a charge reasonably well.

Having a battery replaced is pretty expensive, so I want to be confident before spending the money, and I'm just not feeling confident for the reasons above. Does anyone have any information or experience that would help me to decide if the "blown fuse" diagnosis is accurate?

I had the same idea, but I don't have another compatible AC charger. But the fact that you suggest that I investigate this does answer my question ... namely, just because the Hardware Diagnostics asserts that the battery fuse is blown, that does not mean that anything is definitely wrong with the battery. It should really say, the battery fuse may be blown. Anyways, as it happens, after a couple of days of usage this problem seems to have resolved itself. The laptop now charges while being used, if it's plugged in, and the Hardware Diagnostics no longer says that the fuse is blown.

@emcee510, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Have you tried using an alternate compatible AC adapter and check if the issue persists?

If yes, then it could be a faulty battery. Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service options for your Notebook.
