Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My 3 year old laptop has developed an issue with the CPU fan (I assume its the CPU fan as it's the only one I see in the Maintenance and Service guide) so does that mean it will be the last HP laptop computer I am ever going to own?

I thought since it is out of warranty, I'd have to pay for the part and do it myself.  However, it seems as though this is not an option.  After checking the Illustrated Parts page and going over to the Parts Surfer website, punching in my serial number, I see the most useless support page I have ever seen.  It lists all spare parts for my laptop ... of which none are available.  Also, there is a column that says "CSR" (Customer Self Repair) with a big fat "N" under everything but the power supply.  That has an "A".  Not that any of that is explained anywhere but I assume it means N(o), you can't fix your own laptop but you can buy an A(ftermarket) power supply (that we'll use to void your warranty if anything goes wrong with it).

So 3 years (almost to the month) after I buy this thing, I start to have a problem and the only way to address it is to take it to one of TWO local Authorized Service Center (ASC) near me.  A large urban city with TWO ASCs ... really?  To pay how much to fix it when I could just do it myself for less since the warranty is no longer in effect? Can't void what you don't have.

In any case, someone please tell me I am wrong about this and what I can do about this laptop except take a sledgehammer to it.

None of us here works for HP so we will just try to help and ignore the digs. You say it is out of warranty. Fine. You could take it to an HP authorized service center but that would be the most expensive way to proceed and they very likely will not have the part. If you are able to open it yourself there are now no adverse consequences such as loss of warranty from a DIY repair. You have an 8th gen i5 CPU and integrated Intel graphics so according to the Service Manual:

Manual

This is the part you need:

(14) For use in models equipped with a UMA graphics subsystem L20818-001

This is the fan AND heatsink which you technically could do without but the replacement is so much easier if you do not have to separate the fan from the heatsink and try to remount the new fan. It can get a little tricky as you have to get it just so or it will buzz.

This is it for $10:

Using the part number I found many more options on eBay. Amazon may have it, too.

HP out of stock as I suspected.

Done this repair many times on many laptops so if you need any more help do not hesitate to ask. If this is the solution please mark it as such.

Hi. Thanks for the reply and offer to help.

I know which part I need and how to fix it.  I just hoped I was wrong about the complete lack of support from HP on a 3 year old laptop.  Its not like I am trying to repair an 8 year old laptop.

PC's (mini or NUC) and a mini projector can replace a laptop nowadays so .. never spending another dime on an HP product.  Neither should anyone reading this.

Not sure what more you expected. Out of warranty HP was not going to fix it. The part? Easily found. So good luck to you and thanks.
