Laptop has shut off inexplicably a few times last few days, battery was good. Less than 2 yrs old. Restarted okay and seems to run 0kay. There is some small ticking sound so I took the case apart thinking the fan might be dirty, fan looks okay and the fan is not ticking. Ticking almost seemed to be the hard drive component? Downoaded & ran HP hardware diagnostics quick test. Bothshort and long drive tests failed with the code below. What to do? Thanks for assistance,

Hello @beelmix,
Failure ID RXGKHH-8GA979-XD7X6K-60UR13 translates to Failure Code 303 or Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure.
This is a hardware issue of the hard drive and most likely explains the "ticking" and the sudden shutdowns. Immediately backup any important data. Otherwise, you can attempt to retrieve your data using a USB to SATA adapter.
You're not under warranty therefore if you do choose to contact HP for support, you will need to pay a fee.
If you're not comfortable with opening up the laptop to replace the hard drive, you can take your laptop to your nearest tech repair shop. Any conventional 2.5" hard drive will do but an SSD is recommended for stability and performance. Steps to the replacement of the hard drive are located on pages 60-62 of your computer's Maintenance and Service Guide.
Just wanted to let you know that there is also the option of an M.2 SSD. It is either or, not both. This will require the purchasing of the SSD drive board, however.
Your laptop came with Windows 10 and therefore the activation key is located in the BIOS. If you have any HP Recovery Media, you can use that to reinstall the original OS, however, the new drive should then be greater than or equal to 1TB in capacity. Otherwise, you can reinstall Windows 10 from the Media Creation Tool using a different computer and reinstall drivers available on your computer's Software and Driver's page.
Sorry about the long post.
Best regards,
Eddy
