It keeps saying that my current version of diagnostics is not up to date and I need to update it but I can't leave that page where it showed the message, if I exit it will still bring me back to the page and I don't know why nor how to rectify it

Hi @Lilith257,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP laptop is stuck in the HP Diagnostics UEFI tool, possibly due to an outdated version of the diagnostics software, and you cannot exit or update it normally.

Here are steps you can try to fix this issue.

Force Restart the Laptop:

  • Turn off the laptop completely by holding down the power button for around 10-15 seconds.
  • Once it's completely off, turn it back on to see if it bypasses the diagnostics tool.

Exit Diagnostics UEFI (If Possible):

  • If the diagnostics screen is still showing, try pressing ESC or F10 to exit or return to the BIOS menu.
  • Alternatively, you might need to press F9 to boot from another device if the diagnostics is preventing the boot.

Check for BIOS Update:

If you're able to exit the diagnostic tool and return to the main BIOS screen:

  • Go to the "System Information" section to check the current version of the BIOS and Diagnostics.
  • If it’s outdated, try to update the BIOS. You can download the latest version of the BIOS and diagnostics software from the HP support website.

Update UEFI Diagnostics Using HP Support Assistant (If You Can Boot into Windows):

  • If you’re able to boot into Windows, download and run the HP Support Assistant. It should be able to update the UEFI diagnostics software.
  • Open HP Support Assistant and check for updates.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Shut down the laptop.
  • Disconnect all peripherals (USB devices, external monitors, etc.) and unplug the power adapter.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power cable and restart the laptop.

Perform a System Restore (If Stuck in Loop):

  • If the diagnostics tool is continuously showing up, and you cannot exit, performing a system restore to a point before the issue occurred could help. You can do this via the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
    • Restart your laptop and press F11 during boot to access WinRE.
    • Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

Reset BIOS to Default Settings (If You Can't Boot):

  • If you can access the BIOS (by pressing F10 during boot), try resetting the BIOS settings to default:
    • In BIOS, look for Restore Defaults or Optimized Defaults, then save and exit.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
