Hi hp,

First off, happy new year and hope you are well and safe.

I have a laptop that was bought in 2017 and was used, then not used much at all 2018+2019 and then I've used it 2020 (lockdown life!).

I noticed that the battery has swelled and this seems to be a common occurrence with these hp models and their batteries. I have never let any engineer touch the machine nor have I opened the case.

Note - I'm aware of the hazard for this swelling; the machine has no power connected etc and I do not intend in powering it up again.

I'm outside of warranty, but this is by no means due to negligence or wear and tear considering the investment and actual time of use; so I'm wondering what solutions there are for this?

The track pad is broken due to it (I initially thought I banged it or something before finding out about the battery!).

Could someone from support contact me with a possible solution please?

This is your contact. HP will not call you for out of warranty repair. The solution seems self-evident. The battery needs replaced. If it is swelling and pressuring the trackpad then it is likely replacing the battery may make the trackpad work correctly. If you want a manual and/or video for the battery replacement and a web link to a place to buy one let us know. This is a very doable repair.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response, much appreciated!

Just to confirm, are you suggesting that the issue with this situation is completely out of HP's hands now due to no warranty?

Fairly certain I wouldn't of signed up to this if this was to just be expected.

HP did issue a service advisory on Omen products for this issue so it would not hurt to open a case with HP and inquire about if this advisory is still valid. You have nothing to lose at this point by asking.

c05851787 is the advisory number

go to support.hp.com to open a case.

Thanks for the info here - Wasn't aware about that!

I assume that this is sort of an hp issue here - I'm just thinking, a battery swell like this with like 2 years of use, for me, seems a little out of balance. Is it a probable manufacturing or design fault?

Here is a link to a battery recall.  Check if your device is in the list.

You can check all that out. Don't think there are any Omens on the battery recall list, however. Lithium Ion batteries swell. It is not unique to HP. "Inherent to lithium-ion polymer battery technology is the potential for swelling of the battery cells"

So whatever you can do to get HP to replace the battery for free is great. I wish you the best of luck. Whatever happens, however, the battery needs to be replaced and we are willing to help you do it yourself if it comes to that. Expected maintenance on a laptop.
