My laptop is overheating and throttling its performance. The fans are working fine, and I’ve cleaned them, but the air they’re blowing is cold, even though the CPU temperature is over 95°C. Even when the laptop is idle, the CPU temperature stays around 85°C. During a stress test with IntelBurnTest, the clock speed got locked at 0.4GHz, which is a sign of heat throttling.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? My warranty expired 3 months ago 😞 - If I need to buy a new heatsink, where’s the best place to get one (Austria) ?

it sounds like the heatsink may not be functioning properly, even though the fans are operational. Here’s a breakdown of what could be happening and how to proceed:

 

Possible Causes

Heatsink Contact Issue: The heatsink may not be making proper contact with the CPU/GPU die. This could be due to:

  • Improper factory installation.
  • Dried or insufficient thermal paste.
  • Warped heatsink base.

Thermal Paste Degradation: Over time, thermal paste can dry out and lose effectiveness, leading to poor heat transfer.

Internal Dust Buildup: Even if fans are clean, internal dust between the heatsink fins can block airflow.

BIOS or EC Firmware Issue: Sometimes, firmware bugs can mismanage thermal profiles or fan curves.

 

Recommended Steps

Check Thermal Paste & Heatsink Mounting:

  • If you're comfortable opening the laptop, remove the heatsink, clean off the old thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol, and reapply a high-quality thermal paste (e.g., Arctic MX-6, Noctua NT-H2).
  • Ensure the heatsink is mounted evenly and firmly.

Inspect Heatsink Pipes:

  • Check if the heat pipes are warm or cold during operation. Cold pipes with a hot CPU suggest a failed heat pipe (rare but possible).

BIOS Update:

  • Visit the HP Support page for your model and check for the latest BIOS and firmware updates.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Restart the laptop and press Esc > F2 to enter diagnostics.
  • Run the “System Test” and “Thermal Test” to check for hardware issues.
