This is a known problem that happens to many OEM laptops, not just HP, and could be called a feature.
The laptop is pulling all the power from the adapter and there is insufficient power to charge the battery.
You can overheat the laptop and shorten its lifespan if the battery has to be charged during game play.
Thank you for using HP products and posting to the community.

It's not broken. This is normal. The laptop needs all the power provided by the adapter to run itself and play the game. When you close the game the laptop will charge normally again. The only thing that might help is to turn down brightness on the screen or play the game on an external monitor and close the laptop lid to shut off the built-in screen.

Connect an external monitor from the HDMI port or the USB-C port. Change power properties to where the "when I close the lid" is set to "do nothing". Then set the video to show on the external monitor.
