hp 15-p393nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello. I am a job corps student who run's a small laptop repair/diagnostic's service in my dorm but the reason iv'e come to the forums's today is because I recently received a hp 15-p393nr which i was told kept shutting off after only seconds of being on. I at first figured it was a virus so i swapped out his hard drive with one of my empty ssd's i use for checking for hard drive malfunctions but that wasn't the issue. next, I opened it up and cleaned the dust from the fan and then tried to boot once again, still failed. Finally, i did a full disassembly and found the thermal compound was dry and cracked so i ordered high grade liquid metal thermal compound and applied that to the CPU. after doing this the laptop booted up fine and booted into my ssd with no problems only to shut back down three minutes later. Somewhat annoyed by this point, i took to the web and did some research on this specific model and found out it was prone to overheating due to the CPU heat sink malfunctioning or not carrying heat from the CPU. With that knowledge, i once again took to the web to try and find a replacement heat sink but the issue it.. i cant find one anywhere. By now i was thoroughly annoyed which brings me to the ever so trusty hp forums. I would like to know if there is any way someone knows of where i can find the laptop's heat sink or a heat sink that may not be made for the laptop, but will fit and function normally for optimal use.  i also contacted HP on the phone only to learn they don't make this laptop anymore so they don't have parts for it.

As I started in my writing, I already know the part I need and I already know its not in production. What I specifically asked was if anyone knew of a replacement heatsink that can fit for this latop. Of all the laptops ever made I'm positive that there is a heat sink that will fit my latop even if it wasn't made for my specific model.

@Squeeker8  that seems like it might be true, but laptop heatsinks are "one off" devices designed specifically for one model series. Motherboards are the same way. So you are going to have to find the right heatsink by part number. But let's take a step back for just a minute and think what a heatsink is. It is a block of thermal conductive metal. As long as it is the same shape as when made there is really nothing that can be defective about a heatsink. In this case the heatsink includes tubing and it is possible for tubes to be kinked or otherwise blocked off and that can require replacement of the heatsink.

A fan on the other hand is a more complex device than people think. It has some internal electronics and sensors and can go bad. Fans can be removed and replaced while keeping the same heatsink. I will also point out that the motherboard fan sensor can go bad and what seems to be a heatsink/fan problem can be the motherboard. Having fixed hundreds of laptops over a couple decades I will say bad motherboard fan sensors that require motherboard replacement are at least equally common as bad fans.

So here is the fan:

And this is the heatsink:
