I have replaced the old HDD (2.5-inch) in my HP Pavilion 15-cs0058od laptop with a new SSD. I bought a hard disk enclosure and inserted the old HDD so I can use it for additional storage. When I connected it to the laptop via USB, it showed Local Disk (D:) and Recovery (E:), but I am getting an error stating that D:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. Is it not readable because the old hard drive has a bootable Windows OS? I appreciate your help, as I need access to the files on my old hard drive before I reformat it. Thank you.

Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
It sounds like you’re encountering a common issue when trying to access a drive that had an operating system installed. Here are some steps you can take to recover your files from the old HDD:
Check Disk Utility:
- Connect your HDD via the enclosure.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator (search for "cmd" in the Start menu, right-click, and select "Run as administrator").
Use File Recovery Software:
- If chkdsk does not work, you can use data recovery software like Recuva, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, or Stellar Data Recovery. These tools can help you retrieve files even from corrupted drives.
Access in Safe Mode:
- Sometimes, accessing the drive in Safe Mode can help. Restart your laptop and press F8 (or Shift + F8) during boot to access Safe Mode, then try accessing the HDD.
Use Another Computer:
- If possible, try connecting the HDD to another computer. This can sometimes bypass issues that are specific to your current setup.
Backup Important Files:
- If you can access any files, back them up immediately to another drive or cloud storage to prevent further data loss.
Professional Data Recovery:
- If the data is crucial and you're unable to recover it, consider professional data recovery services. They can often recover data from severely corrupted drives.
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for the reply. I followed the instructions that you have shared to update the BIOS. I am still getting the same error stating that D:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. Please let me know if there are any other things I could try as I need files from that hard disk. Thanks and appreciate your help.
