Greetings!
I own a ProBook 6460b and would like to upgrade it's CPU from the i5-2510M. I've been searching for 2nd gen Intel CPUs online and found the i7-2860QM to be quite appealing, mainly due to the fact it has four cores and not a too slow clock speed.
I want to ask whether or not is this CPU compatible with my laptop, and if not, would like to know the fastest/most powerful alternative.
Thanks in advance!

Hi:
Oops!
Glad you caught that.
Yes, it looks like that just the EliteBook's support the i7-2860QM processor.
Your model series only supports the dual core processors...i7-2640M being the best one.
However, there is this renowned PC user benchmark site where folks upload their hardware configurations to a huge database.
Looking at the report for your HP 6460b, there are some folks that have installed processors such as the i7-2670QM.
UserBenchmark: HP ProBook 6460b Compatible Components
Looking at the list of supported motherboards in chapter 3 of the service manual, I see no difference in motherboards supported for use with dual core or quad core processors.
So, maybe it is just as simple as HP did not offer the quad core processors in the Probook 6460b, and that was reserved just for the more upscale Elitebooks?
So, a quad core processor would probably work, but now I have to say 'probably,' not definitely.

Hi:
According to chapter 1 of the maintenance and service guide on your notebook's support page, the best processor you can install is the i7-2860QM quad core processor, so what you would like to do should work.

Greetings again,
I decided to look into the user guide you mentioned, however I noticed that there isn't a tick symbol next to the CPU model in my laptop model's column. Is this of any concern or am I just fine installing the CPU into the laptop?
Thank you for taking your time answering my questions,
