HP Laptop Iris Model 17t-cn300 CTO2

My laptop shut down stating that fan b had issues.  I could hear a knocking like sound coming from the laptop and my first guess was the fan.  It's upsetting because I'm nearing warranty end and only had my laptop for almost a year, not yet, but it seems like the fan breaks down almost perfectly timed for the one year warranty to expire.

What I want to know is, do I have to replace the fan with the exact same one, in terms of shape and where the cord runs out?  From what I can tell, the answer is a yes because laptop fans come in all shapes and the screw holes are not in the same place on all fans and the cord may be in a different spot.

This kind of sucks because I was hoping to add a more expensive fan to my laptop, one that will last longer than a year.  I found the same kind of fan on Amazon...pretty much the same except my dead fan ends in 9302 and the fan I ordered ends in 92...  Other than that, exact same fan in build, shape, size, DC, etc..

I tried HP Support on the HP website and it does not exists.  The website is even broken, the worst website I have ever seen.

Hi @hjjr1978 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your laptop might be experiencing a hardware issue with the cooling fan. The knocking sound you're hearing is often a sign that the fan is obstructed or malfunctioning. Here's what you can do:

Please try the following Troubleshoots steps.

1.    Turn off the Unit.

2.    Disconnect the AC adapter.

3.    Remove any discs from the disc drive.

4.    Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

5.    Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

6.    Disconnect the AC adapter press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

7.    Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.

Step 2

Turn off the unit and please press and hold the Windows key + letter B key and the power button together for 30 seconds after 30 seconds, 1st release the power button but keep holding the Windows key and B key for ten more seconds and then release these two keys If done correctly, you will see the display flashing once. Please attempt it thrice as this step and Restart the unit

Step3

The unit has to be turned off, Press Win+ V while holding these two keys then Press the Power button, continue to hold all three keys for 30 seconds and then release the Power button first and then release these two keys Please attempt it thrice  and then you may get a Pop-Up CMOS Check and it will restart the unit

Even if you don't get a Pop-up restart the unit manually after 3 attempts.

  • Power Off and Unplug: Shut down the laptop completely and unplug it from any power source. If the battery is removable, take it out.
  • Inspect the Fan: If you're comfortable opening up your laptop, you can check the fan for any visible obstructions or debris. Sometimes, dust or small particles can cause the fan to make unusual noises.
  • Clean the Fan: Use compressed air to blow out any dust from the fan and surrounding areas. Be careful not to let the fan spin too quickly as you blow air into it.
  • Check for Obstructions: Ensure that nothing is obstructing the fan’s movement. Sometimes, internal components or loose cables can interfere with the fan.
  • Update BIOS and Drivers: Ensure your BIOS and chipset drivers are up-to-date. Sometimes, fan issues can be related to outdated system firmware or drivers.
  • Test the Fan: If your laptop has a built-in diagnostic tool, you can use it to test the fan. Many HP laptops have a built-in diagnostics tool that you can access by pressing F2 or F10 during startup.  HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
