My hp pavilion gaming laptop's ssd just recently died, with my laptop getting occurring blue screen and into a 'boot device not found screen.' I went and bought a new ssd and installed it into my laptop so according to the system diagnosis my ssd is now working. However, windows isn't downloaded into the ssd so now I'm not sure how to proceed.
Is there anyway I can use my previous Windows from activation code or smtg. Or must I buy new Windows for my laptop.
I also don't think it is possible but is there anyway for me to backup my data from my previous ssd or is all the data just lost.

Hi @bujaam,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you’re dealing with several issues related to a failed SSD and reinstalling Windows. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you with each part of your problem:
**1. Reinstalling Windows on the New SSD
**a. Create a Windows Installation Media
Download Windows 10 or Windows 11 ISO:
- Go to the Microsoft Windows download page.
- Download the Media Creation Tool for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Create Installation Media:
- Run the Media Creation Tool and select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC.
- Follow the prompts to create a bootable USB flash drive with Windows.
**b. Install Windows on the New SSD
Boot from Installation Media:
- Insert the bootable USB flash drive into your laptop.
- Restart the laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, F12, Esc, or Del during startup).
- Change the boot order to prioritize the USB drive.
Install Windows:
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows.
- When prompted for a product key, you can choose to enter it later if you’re reinstalling on a system that was previously activated.
**c. Activate Windows
Using Existing Activation:
- After installation, Windows should automatically activate if it detects a previous valid license tied to your hardware.
- If it doesn’t activate automatically, you can enter your old product key by going to Settings > Update & Security > Activation and selecting Change product key.
Digital License:
- If your previous Windows was activated using a digital license linked to your Microsoft account, Windows should activate once you sign in with your Microsoft account.
**2. Backing Up Data from the Old SSD
**a. Connect the Old SSD
Use an External Enclosure or Adapter:
- Purchase an external SSD enclosure or adapter. These allow you to connect your old SSD to your laptop via USB.
Connect to Your Laptop:
- Insert the old SSD into the enclosure or adapter and connect it to your laptop.
**b. Access and Backup Data
Access Files:
- Open File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS) and check if you can access the files on the old SSD.
Copy Data:
- Copy the files you need from the old SSD to your new SSD or an external backup drive.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
