The laptop is of a friend of mine. She bought it a few months ago.
She complaint that the laptop made a lot of noise, I had a look at it and the laptop run hot, around 60 degrees idle so the fan run continuously. Besides updating the bios and some driver updates not much to do so the laptop went back for repairs under warranty (I assumed bad pasting as the AMD 5500u should be pretty efficient ).
When the laptop returned it was better, between 40 and 50 degrees idle but the moment an external monitor is connected gpu runs a bit warmer and the fans turn on pretty high.
Not completely unexpected but I agreed to have another look to see if I can find an 3rdparty fan control or something. What I saw instead was a new bios (F35), released last week, Lets start with installing that (old bios was F34), maybe it helps.
After the update and restart the laptop wants to take off. Idle CPU and GPU are both 70 degrees (Celsius) and after 10 minutes of no CPU/GPU use (between 1 and 2 percent in Task managar ) around 65 degrees. Updating the BIOS was a mistake but the issue is I can not roll it back.
The roll back option is gone from the Diagnostic tool and using an old Diagnostic tool that I downloaded is not working.
Not sure if the bios is the issue or the laptop is faulty but for now I made the issue way worse and I don't know how to fix it (or if possible). All drivers are up to date.
I am a bit blown away that a rollback of the bios is not possible anymore (I read more complaints).

It’s frustrating to see the laptop’s temperature spike after a BIOS update, especially when you can’t roll it back. I can understand how concerning it must be when even low activity keeps the system so warm. Let’s try a few questions and troubleshooting steps to get the system cooler and stable.
- After the BIOS update, did you notice if the fan speed has increased in proportion to the heat, or is the fan running at a low or inconsistent speed?
- Do you have any fan control settings available in the BIOS or through HP’s support utilities that could let you adjust thermal profiles?
- Has there been any change in power settings or throttling options in Task Manager > Performance > CPU that might indicate a performance mode is enabled?
In the meantime let's try these steps.
Check Thermal and Power Management Settings in BIOS: After the BIOS update, power and thermal settings may have changed. Restart the laptop and enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F10 or Esc on startup). Look for options under Power Management or Thermal Management and try enabling any Cool Mode or equivalent, then save and restart.
Adjust Windows Power Plan: Go to Control Panel > Power Options and set the power plan to Power Saver or Balanced. Then, under Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings, reduce the Processor Power Management maximum state to 80–90%. This can help limit CPU usage and reduce heat.
Update or Reinstall HP Command Center or HP System Event Utility: If you have the HP Command Center, it might help you control the fan speed and thermal profiles. Ensure it’s up-to-date via the HP Support Assistant or download the latest version from HP’s website. The HP System Event Utility also controls certain power and fan settings, so it’s worth reinstalling.
Run a Hard Reset: Sometimes a hard reset can recalibrate the fan and thermal settings after an update. Shut down the laptop, unplug it, remove the battery if possible, and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. Then, plug it back in, restart, and see if the temperatures stabilize.
Consider Reverting Firmware Using USB Recovery (if available): create a recovery USB with an earlier BIOS version following HP’s instructions. Boot from this USB, and it may allow you to install the previous version. This method might bypass the standard rollback limitations in the Diagnostic tool.

The speed of the fans is in line with the temperature, the fans do increase (a lot) when temperature rises
- Do you have any fan control settings available in the BIOS or through HP’s support utilities that could let you adjust thermal profiles?
Unfortunately not. Hoped the AMD software would have an option but also no.
- Has there been any change in power settings or throttling options in Task Manager > Performance > CPU that might indicate a performance mode is enabled?
Laptop is set to "best power efficiency"
Update or Reinstall HP Command Center or HP System Event Utility
There is no HP command Center on this laptop. I updates the system Event Utility
Run a Hard Reset:

That is not possible and the main reason for creating this thread.
Again, the laptop was already send back to HP for fixing this issue under warranty, it was a bit better when the laptop returned (but that can also be because of the room temperature is lower now it is not summer). Now testing and after turning on the laptop and do nothing for 5 minutes the tempera raised to 58 degrees with between 5 and 10 percent cpu usage. After the CPU settled to 0/1 percent the temperature settled to 53 degrees. The moment you start word and do simple typing the temperature goes to around 60 degrees.
I am used working with laptops with AMD chips (have one myself) and never encountered this before.
I don't think sending at back again will fix this. Can it be a faulty processor? Is this testable?
