@Huffer, you are AWESOME!! Thank you!
I removed the battery and hinge covers. I removed all the screws on the back cover, including the ones underneath the CD-ROM drive. I pried it open most of the way around but could not manage to get it off and didnt want to force it. I did try to loosen or remove the bolts going through the hinge and had no luck. I don't.have a small enough wrench socket to fit that bolt head. So I put a tiny bit of oil betwwen the metal plates, hoping that would help looasen them up. Then I put everything back together with no lwdtovwr dap
Now I will go to the repair manual you posted and see what I was doing wrong. Alternatively, I can take it to the local repair shop knowing it is a relatively easy fix. Thank you so much!!!

Make sure to account for all the screws shown on p. 47 or so of the Manual and you want to use an old credit card or spunger tool to snap apart the upper and lower halves of the casing. Walk it around and unsnap the plastic clips. Learning how to do that is about 80% of being a laptop technician.

@Hufer - I had to put this aside for a a week because of work. Just wanted to say again thank you for your help and for the link that led me to the service manual. Getting the bottom off after removing all rhe screws is tricky, as it wraps around. I have all the screws stuck to a magnet (AWAY from the work & the screen) so they won't scatter or wander away. All the short ones look exactly the same size, but the manual says they're not. I'll have to line them up & look at them more carefully when I put them back in. I bought tools & learned how to take electronics apart by replacing the digitizer assembly & various other parts on my phone 3 or 4 times. When the repair shop wants twice the replacement cost of the phone just to replace the screen, you either fork out repeatedly or you learn to do it yourself.
So now I have the laptop with the cover off waiting for me to.get back to the task. 10 years of dust there - hoo boy! Got my can of air today so will see if that works to clean it.
