Hinge broken and screen cracked

As multiple people here have also mentioned.

My laptop started grinding last year, and around 6 months ago this led to the screen cracking, which got much worse after subsequently opening the laptop screen to the point it has been becomes unusable.

I have had many laptops in the past, and I don't think it is reasonable for the screen to crack like this when the laptop has only been on a desk, i.e. not mishandled or battered in any way.

Even though out of warranty, I'd like a replacement screen. It's reasonable to expect a laptop of HPs standards to be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.
